The 1121 Collective is a collaborative theatre company, drawing on the talents of numerous artists, actors, writers and directors to produce innovative and exciting new theatre.
Founded two years by Jacqueline Busby, Anthony Steel and Deng MaoHui The 1121 Collective has gone on to produce plays, musicals and monologues with Oliver Walton joining the company in 2016.
Jacqueline is currently working as a courier in Manchester. She has written two plays (A-Bomb on Broadway and When I Last Saw You You Were Just A Girl) and has directed two more, utilising music and sound to examine trans experiences in alternate realities. She is currently in the process of building a piece informed by Anime and The Beach Boys.
Originally from Blackburn, Lancashire, Anthony graduated from the University of Manchester in 2014. He has written one play for the collective (Jakubiak) and directed A-Bomb on Broadway and You/Me/Tomorrow which transferred to HOME Manchester in 2016 and 2017. He often produces work that touches upon queer themes and identity.
Jess is a currently a Fundraiser at the Royal Exchange Theatre. Previous projects have included performances at Shanghai International Theatre Contemporary Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Jess recently had two of her short plays published by Routledge in an anthology. Jess will be producing for the 1121 Collective and forcing them to partake in her obsession with spreadsheets.
Mao is currently doing a PhD in Drama at the University of Manchester. His research interests include the representations of age on screen, childhood and cinema, memory, film distribution and exhibition, cultures, realism and fantasy, and film economy. He wants to become a lecturer… Hopefully. In his free time (when he has free time) he writes plays. MaoHui blogs at maohui and tweets at @dengmaohui.
Oliver is potentially Australian. He’s written two plays for The 1121 Collective (outdoor speeding/an ambulance musical and You/Me/Tomorrow) and directed an award winning short. He is interested in classic cinema, underground club scenes, virtual reality and immersive theatre and hopes to combine all of these fantastically at some point.
